What is IV Therapy?
Vitamins, minerals and amino acids are important for optimal health. By giving nutrients through an IV, your digestive system is bypassed, thus allowing for higher levels of nutrients to be delivered to your cells via the bloodstream. This allows for cellular support and care; optimizing cellular function. This is especially helpful for people suffering from inflammation, cancer, malabsorption and digestive concerns or when the therapeutic dose is simply too high to take orally. I personally don’t enjoy taking supplements, so by doing an IV monthly, I know I’m giving my body the resources it needs for optimal function.
IV therapy has shown great benefit from reducing the severity of common cold and flu symptoms to care for chronic conditions such as cancer. Some of the conditions that can be helped with IV therapy include: fatigue, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, infection, asthma, chest pain, detoxification, congestive heart failure, palpitations, heart disease, migraines, PMS, respiratory problems, seasonal allergies, hives, hyperthyroidism and acute muscle spasms to name a few. A combination of vitamins, minerals and amino acids (called a Myer’s cocktail) can even help athletes with recovery, and our very own Toronto Argonauts have an ND on staff and receive IV care following every game.

The Details – How it works
IV therapy uses high dose vitamins specifically created for each individual depending on their personal needs. A combination of any of the following may be used: (thiamine (b1), riboflavin (B2) niacin (B3), Pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), methycobalamine (B12), magnesium, calcium, selenium, Vitamin C, amino acids, glutathione, zinc, minerals, and natural substances intravenously or intramuscularly.
Many doctors are now using with intravenous vitamin C. Vitamin C has the ability to support host resistance to different diseases, may help the immune system function to fight and kill bacterial and fungal infections as well as killing cancer cells and limiting the spread of cancer.
Oral Nutrients vs. Intravenous Nutrients
IV therapy provides a route of administration that bypasses the digestive system and liver filtration thereby potentially allowing for a greater concentration of nutrients into the cells. This helps the cells function better, which usually leads to the patient feeling better.
Normally, nutrients taken orally enter the cell through active transport; this process requires cell energy and the cell’s ability to transport the nutrients from outside the cell into the cell. Diseased cells lack the energy required and the ability to absorb nutrients effectively, thus decreasing the amount of nutrients that reach the cell. With IV care, nutrients enter the cell without using the cell’s active transport.

How is IV therapy performed?
Therapy can be administered two ways:
- Through a gravity-drawn “drip”. This method takes between 30 and 120 minutes to administer.
- Through a “push”. This is where the naturopathic doctor manually injects via a syringe at a predetermined rate. This method is shorter and usually takes 20 minutes to administer and is only feasible for certain types of injections.
Is IV therapy safe?
IV therapy has an excellent safety record. Your Naturopathic Doctor will have taken a complete health history and performed lab work prior to your first session.
Sensitivities and allergic reactions are possible though rare. Some other risks include infection, clotting and loss of the vein, leakage of fluid into the surrounding tissues, bruising and occasional pain-these are extremely rare, and every measure is taken to prevent them from occurring.
At Naturopathic Living, we adhere to the highest safety and sterilization procedures. All naturopathic doctors that practice IV Care in our clinic are board certified and regulated.
How many visits will I need
for IV Therapy?
IV Therapy is based on the individual and their health condition(s). A typical care plan can range between 4 to 12 visits , or more if used for cancer support. The frequency of visits will be discussed during the initial IV therapy consultation. For cancer patients, we recommend an initial series of 12 IVs, after which time we will re-evaluate. It is often recommended IVs be continued for one year following remission, in order to support the immune system in killing any cancer cells that may be formed.
