What is IV Nutrition Drip?

Vitamins, minerals and amino acids are essential for optimal health. By giving nutrients through an IV, your digestive system is bypassed, thus allowing for higher levels of nutrients to be delivered to your cells via the bloodstream. This allows for cellular healing and restoration; optimizing cellular function. This is especially helpful for people suffering from inflammation, cancer, malabsorption and digestive concerns or when the therapeutic dose is simply too high to take orally.  I personally don’t enjoy taking supplements, so by doing an IV monthly, I know I’m giving my body the resources it needs for optimal function.

IV therapy has shown great benefit from reducing the severity of common cold and flu symptoms to the treatment of chronic conditions such as cancer. Some of the conditions that can be helped with IV therapy include: fatigue, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, infection, asthma, chest pain, detoxification, congestive heart failure, palpitations, heart disease, migraines, PMS, respiratory problems, seasonal allergies, hives, hyperthyroidism and acute muscle spasms to name a few. A combination of vitamins, minerals and amino acids (called a Myer’s cocktail) can even help athletes recover faster, and our very own Toronto Argonauts have an ND on staff and receive IV treatments following every game.

The Details – How it works

IV therapy uses high dose vitamins specifically created for each individual depending on their personal needs. A combination of any of the following may be used: (thiamine (b1), riboflavin (B2) niacin (B3), Pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), methycobalamine (B12), magnesium, calcium, selenium, Vitamin C, amino acids, glutathione, zinc, minerals, and natural substances intravenously or intramuscularly.

Many doctors are now treating with intravenous vitamin C. Vitamin C has the ability to enhance host resistance to different diseases, increase the functioning of the immune system to fight and kill bacterial and fungal infections as well as killing cancer cells and limiting the spread of cancer.

Oral Nutrients vs. Intravenous Nutrients

IV therapy provides a route of administration that bypasses the digestive system and liver filtration thereby guaranteeing a greater concentration of nutrients into the cells. This helps the cells function better, which usually leads to the patient feeling better.

Normally, nutrients taken orally enter the cell through active transport; this process requires cell energy and the cell’s ability to transport the nutrients from outside the cell into the cell. Diseased cells lack the energy required and the ability to absorb nutrients effectively, thus decreasing the amount of nutrients that reach the cell. With IV therapy, nutrients enter the cell without using the cell’s active transport.

How is IV therapy performed?

Therapy can be administered two ways:

  1. Through a gravity-drawn “drip”. This method takes between 30 and 120 minutes to administer.
  2. Through a “push”. This is where the naturopathic doctor manually injects via a syringe at a predetermined rate. This method is shorter and usually takes 20 minutes to administer and is only feasible for certain types of injections.

Is IV therapy safe?

IV therapy has an excellent safety record. Your Naturopathic Doctor will have taken a complete health history and performed lab work prior to your first treatment.

Sensitivities and allergic reactions are possible though rare. Some other risks include infection, clotting and loss of the vein, leakage of fluid into the surrounding tissues, bruising and occasional pain-these are extremely rare, and every measure is taken to prevent them from occurring.

At Naturopathic Living, we adhere to the highest safety and sterilization procedures.  All naturopathic doctors that practice IV Therapy in our clinic are board certified and regulated.

How many visits will I need
for IV Therapy?

IV Therapy is based on the individual and their health condition(s). A typical treatment regimen can range between 4 to 12 visits to over 12 if being used for cancer support. The frequency of visits will be discussed during the initial IV therapy consultation. For cancer patients, we recommend an initial series of 12 IVs, after which time we will re-evaluate. It is often recommended IVs be continued for one year following remission, in order to support the immune system in killing any cancer cells that may be formed.

Vitamins

Thiamine is needed for the metabolism of carbohydreates, fat and proteins, and is especially involved in carbohydrate metabolism in the brain.  Increased carbohydrate intake may increase the need for thiamine, as does alcohol and aging. A deficiency may decrease the availability of sertonion, Thiamine has been shown to be beneficial in anemia, depression, neuropathy, sciatica, insomnia, and anxiety.

Thiamine, or B1 is best absorbed in an acidic medium.

Riboflavin is needed for the conversion of folate to its usable form, the activation of B6, production of Niacin, thyroid regulation, production of corticosteroids, and glucose metabolism.

Riboflavin is absorbed in the upper GI, and needs an acidic environment for best absorption.

Niacin or Vitamin B3 has been shown to be benifitial in arthritis, high chosterol, anxiety, MS, trigeminal neuralgia, tardive dyskinesia, diabetes, insomnia, dysmenorrhea, migraines, raynauld’s, alcoholism, acne, alzheimers and smoking cessation.

Pantothenic acid, is an essential nutrient, necessary for us to synthesize and metabolize proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, as well as to synthesize coenzyme-A, needed for synethsis of steroid production in the adrenal gland.  A deficiency has been shown to cause insomnia, leg crams, paresthesias of thehands and feet, mental depression, decreased anti-body formation, easy fatigue, postural hypotension, GI disturbances and increased upper respiratory infections.  Studies show benefit for arthritis, dermatitis, exzema, aneimea, adrenal gland function, allergies, stress and athlerosclerosis.

b6 is needed to make neurotransmitters, including serotonin (your happy neurotransmitter), norepinephrine and histamine.  It is believed that dementia is associated with reduced transport.  Nerve development – formation of sphygolipids which develop the myelin sheath surrounding all nerve cells, helps PMS symptoms, including – irritability, depression, headaches, swollen breasts, abdominal bloating, nausea, constipation, acne and lac of co-ordination.  B6 can increase levels of progesterone, dopamine and serotonin; nausea of pregnancy, Carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatism, tardive dyskinesia, depression, demenia, hyperkinetic behaviour, chizophrenia, dermatitis, acne, iron resistant anemia, kidney stones.

Absorbed in the upper intestines.  More acidic the milieu, the great absorption

Often thought of as the key enerygy booster. It supports the adrenal glands (stress and energy), neurological functioning (sleep and mood), red blood cell formation, and helps convert carbohydrates to glucose – the fuel your body uses for energy. Often used for weight loss, as you tend to feel better and with increased energy, you have the potential to burn more calories. B12 deficiency is a serious problem that can cause anemia, fatigue, weakness, constipation, weight loss, depression, poor memory, asthma, vision problems and low sperm count.

Necessary for methylation, synthesising DNA, nerve function, carbohydrate metabolism and blood formation.  Studies have shown benefit for fatigue, insomnia, depression, sciatica, bone spurs, smoking cessation, heart disease / dementia / osteoporosis related to elevated homocysteine levels.

Needs intrinsic factor, hydrochloric acid, proteases and active transport to be absorpted.  Absorbed in the ilium.

Vitamin C has the ability to enhance host resistance to different diseases, increase the functioning of the immune system to fight and kill bacterial and fungal infections as well as killing cancer cells and limiting the spread of cancer.

Needed for collagen synthesis, to convert dopamine to norepinephrine, adrenal health, anti-oxidant, drug metabolism and detoxication, degradation of cholesterol, immune support, cancer prevention, anti-histamine effect (anti-allergy), carnitine synthesis (transports into mitochondria), wound healing, lower back apin (especially if disc degradation), decrease muscle pain after physical fitness, diabetes, heavy metal detoxification, gout, infertility, and anti-inflammatory.

Magnesium is one of our most important minerals, but most of us aren’t getting, or absorbing enough.  Needed for ATP production, gastric acid production, heart regulation, relaxing smooth muscles, and blocking stimulatory neurotransmitters it has many benefits when supplementing.  Studies have shown magnesium to be useful for constipation, sleep, anxiety, depression, muscle cramps, asthma, kidney stones, dysmenorrhea, heart disease, diabetes, fibromyalgia, heaaches, heavy metal toxicity, and even chocolate cravings.

Absorption: absorbed in both the small and large intestines, magnesium is one of the most deficient minerals in our body, and the higher your intake of protein, calcium, alcohol, and vitamin D you take, the more magnesium you need.

Best antioxidant, 1. Wonder drug of anti-aging, ecycles anti-oxidants,  Decreases inflammation, 4. Master of Immune system, . Liver protection,  Increases energy,  great for detoxification

The most abundant mineral in the body.  It is intimately involoved in Vitamin D metabolism, muscle contraction, bone and teeth health.  It is involoved in pH regulation and is needed for active transportation across cell membranes and regulates cell membrane stability.

Evidence has show calcium to be beneficial for osteoporosis, hypertension, blodd clotting, insomnia, smooth and skeletal muscle relaxation, anxiety, hyperactivity, depression – especially post menopausal, lead toxicity, prevention of calcium oxalate stones, prevention of colon cancer and leg cramps.

Zinc is one of the most deficient nutrients in the body, but one of the most needed.  It provides protection agaist heavy metal deficiency.
