The cracking sound is simply the gas being released from the joint capsules. You are able to do the same thing when you 'crack' your knuckles. As to an adjustment needing the noise; there is new research that shows the audible sound is unnecessary to fully adjust the restricted joint. There are different techniques and adjusting styles that do not require torsion to achieve the adjustment and does not make the 'cracking' sound.

No, it won't hurt. There may be some discomfort felt with certain types of muscle work to release the muscle tension. You may feel a little sore immediately afterwards, but this will disappear in a short period of time.
