Keep Calm and Drink Water!

Dr. Edward Chan, Chiropractor

Typically, our bodies contain 60-65% water and many bodily functions are dependent on proper hydration. Some functions include body temperature regulation, carries nutrients to cells, help metabolism and joint lubrication.

Adequate hydration helps your spine. By keeping the body hydrated, spinal fluids can deliver nutrients and water, maintain spinal disc lubrication and remove waste products via diffusion. Spinal disc hydration is facilitated by movement and rest.

Generally, daily amount for women is 2.7 litres and men, 3.7 litres, keeping in mind your environment, the season, activity level and your health (any illness, chronic disease and or medication). Therefore, many factors affect how much water is needed to stay healthy. Mild dehydration from heat or exercise can have negative effects on both physical and mental performance.

As we near the home stretch of summer, ensuring adequate hydration is crucial for your overall health. The recommended daily intake varies—about 2.7 liters for women and 3.7 liters for men—taking into account factors like environment, activity level, health conditions, and medications. Proper hydration not only supports bodily functions like temperature regulation and nutrient transport but also plays a critical role in spinal health.

For optimal spine health, hydration is key. Adequate water intake helps spinal fluids deliver nutrients, maintain disc lubrication, and ease waste products, vital for keeping your spine healthy and functioning well. Remember, mild dehydration, whether from heat or exercise, can impair both physical and mental performance.

Stay hydrated, visit your chiropractor regularly, and prioritize your health as we move through these final summer months. Your body will thank you for it!
