For about 40% of the year, we Canadians don’t get enough natural light to properly support our mitochondria, and What happens? Lower energy, sluggish metabolism, and a dip in mood. Light therapy may help manage in managing mood disorders, including antepartum depression (with a 69% remission rate in 5 weeks using 7,000 lux bright light therapy) and bipolar depression (68% remission). Since 2005, the American Psychiatric Association has even recommended bright light therapy as a standard service for major depressive disorder.
But with so many options—and scams—on the market, how do you choose the right one? The key factors are usability, positioning, light intensity, and glare reduction.
What to Look For:
Glare Reduction
- Choose a device with a diffuser to spread light evenly, avoiding bright spots that cause discomfort.
- Adjustable intensity settings allow you to customize brightness to a comfortable level.
Positioning and Angling
- Flexibility matters. Devices that tilt or adjust let you position the light correctly to get maximum benefit while reducing glare.
- Check the recommended distance—your device should deliver therapeutic intensity without forcing you to sit uncomfortably close.
User Comfort and Size
- Bigger isn’t always better, but larger light boxes often meet clinical standards more effectively.
- If portability matters, consider a compact model, but ensure it still delivers the proper intensity.
Verifying Light Intensity
- The lux rating (light intensity) matters, but don’t just take the manufacturer’s word for it. A basic lux meter can confirm if the device provides the intended brightness at a practical distance.
Blue Light Balance
- While blue light has therapeutic benefits, excessive exposure can disrupt sleep. Look for a device that balances blue light emissions appropriately.
